Singer Model 106-PR Control Valve before RetrofitCity of Sheridan Retrofits Control Valve with Automation for water efficiency

Their Challenge

The City of Sheridan, Wyoming needed more control over their water storage tanks and an increase in system redundancy.

Our Solution

By repurposing an existing Singer® pressure reducing valve, the city leveraged gravity flow from an upstream treatment plant to fill a water storage tank. They reconfigured the valve operation with instrumentation and automation and realigned buried valves in the yard, bringing this otherwise hidden valve to life in their system. The project saved energy since the booster station was no longer needed to fill the tank but served as a back-up for system redundancy when needed.

The existing Singer Model 106-PR was repurposed to a model 106-2SC-PCO. The valve now has flow and level control, plus the capacity to interact with and be controlled by a Singer control panel using new valve-mounted solenoids that replaced the hydraulic controlled mechanical pilots. An electronic valve position indicator and differential pressure transmitter were also added to the valve.

The Result

Having two options to fill the tank means the city can use real time data to choose to run either option as best suited. The new automation will enable operations to be performed remotely from the control room at the head office.

California Pumping with Singer Metering Valve

santa-margarita-singer-projectCALIFORNIA PUMPING WITH SINGER METERING VALVE

Their Challenge

In Southern California’s semi-arid climate, the Santa Margarita Water District relies on imported water to supply its customers. At its Plaza Pump Station, source water was coming in through a hydraulic control valve, which wasn’t functioning consistently. The high-pressure differential was causing cavitation and therefore damage in the control valve. And the district was unable to measure the amount of water being pumped from another water agency.

Our Solution

One Singer solenoid flow control valve was fitted with Singer’s Anti-Cavitation Trim so it can handle the pressure drop. Metering functions allows Santa Margarita to control and verify the volume of water taken. And the valve has an automated control panel so it can be monitored on site or remotely.

The Result

The valve can break 100 pounds of pressure without cavitation damage and the metering function solves the guessing game of how much water is flowing. As a result, the district has installed other Singer valves and control systems throughout its distribution system.

“WHEN AN AGENCY BILLS US AND TELLS US HOW MUCH WATER WE USED FOR THE MONTH, WE VERIFY THE VOLUME WITH OUR SINGER METERING VALVE.”

Singer Valve Improves Aussie Water Supply

Melbourne-Singer-ProjectSINGER VALVE IMPROVES AUSSIE WATER SUPPLY

Their Challenge

South East Water Ltd., one of Melbourne, Australia’s three water retailers, depends upon Singer Valve for a variety of pressure reducing and altitude control valves. When the valve at the Knox Reservoir water storage tank wore out and created too much noise, South East Water asked Singer to help.

Our Solution

To minimize pipe pressure and to avoid an overflowing tank, Warren Roberts of Siemens Ltd and Doug Stewart of South East Water selected the Singer Dual Solenoid Valve for Positioning and SCADA Control. The valve was customized with Singer’s Anti-Cavitation Trim and a Singer control panel.

The Singer control panel receives a signal from SCADA control, telling the valve to maintain the tank’s water level as specified by the system. Because the control panel performs on command, it maintains the appropriate water level, preventing the tank from overflowing.

The Result

Singer’s 2SC-PCO valve was the perfect solution. Tank levels are controlled accurately. Cavitation noise and damage are minimized thanks to the Singer Anti-Cavitation Trim. And they can control the system from a remote location. “Singer has a proven history of solid performance and it offers excellent product support,” says Roberts. “That’s why South East Water specified a Singer valve.”

“SOUTH EAST WATER HAS BEEN USING SINGER VALVES FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS.”

Singer Valve Solves Triple Dilema in Ohio

Electronics_2SC-PCO_ButlerCountySINGER VALVE SOLVES TRIPLE DILEMA IN OHIO

Their Challenge

Butler County, which purchases water wholesale to provide drinking water to its population of 100,000, faced three problems. 1. Extreme pressure drops at a pressure reducing and metering facility, resulting in severe cavitation damage and extreme noise to two valves. 2. The inability to sequence the two valves. 3. The inability to accurately control levels in two remote storage tanks. The operational protocol was further complicated due to the fact that the remote tanks are at different overflow elevations and design capacities.

Our Solution

Thanks to our Singer dual solenoid electronic valve with anti-cavitation trim and multi-process control panel, all three issues were solved in one application. One valve was replaced with a new 16” (400 mm) Singer dual solenoid electronic valve with Singer’s anti-cavitation trim. The second 16” (400 mm) valve was replaced by another manufacturer due to competitive bidding requirements. A Singer multi-process control panel—programmed with a complicated, custom algorithm that we wrote—sequences the two 16” (400 mm) valves and controls water levels in the remote storage tanks. It interfaces smoothly with Butler County’s SCADA.

The Result

The Singer Anti-Cavitation Trim eliminates cavitation damage and noise and the Singer multi-process control panel provides consistent control of remote storage tank levels and sequences the new valve.

“THE ABILITY TO INCORPORATE A CUSTOMIZED CONTROL SYSTEM HAS PROVEN TO BE INVALUABLE FOR THIS APPLICATION.”

- Tom Rhoades, Chief Water Operator, Butler County, Ohio
